1) If you need my assistance, I'm
available on a limited basis... after all, I have a household to run (my
own 5 dogs keep me pretty busy! lol), as well as a business. You're
welcome to contact me ... consulting on behavior problems is a fee-based
service. For a fee of $30, I will do an in-depth email or telephone consult based on
the nutritional/behavioral/medical history form that you submit to me,
with suggestions for diet change (if necessary), medical intervention, and
behavior modification protocols. This fee is based on a "per consult"
basis. Aggression/reactivity cases
may require more in-depth work, and may even require a hands-on evaluation.
Use the form available HERE
to tell me about your dog, so that we can get started working!
2) Depending on the scope of the problem,
you'll want books and videos to help you to learn to communicate more
effectively with your dog. There are a few that I recommend
routinely to owners, covering clicker training and dog behavior:
Dog Behavior:
The Culture Clash, by Jean
Donaldson (this covers dog behavior in general)
Homeward
Bound: Life with Dogs by Brenda Rushman (Release date: Jan. 1,
2003!) Covers behavior, working with rescued dogs, doing
responsible rescue, how to adopt a dog safely, etc. See the
Table of Contents by clicking the link!
Clicker Training:
Homeward
Bound: Life with Dogs by Brenda Rushman (Release date: Jan. 1,
2003!) Covers behavior, working with rescued dogs, doing
responsible rescue, how to adopt a dog safely, etc. See the
Table of Contents by clicking the link!
The 3-video set "Clicker Fun!" by Deb
Jones, PhD. (it's important to understand the basics of clicker
training philosophy, so that you can effectively communicate to your
dog what you want!)
If it's necessary for you to choose
between the videos, and you've never done clicker training, the "Click &
Go" video covers the basics (you
get a discount if you buy all 3). This is really the best clicker
training video set I've found... and I own almost ALL of them!
Well worth the money, so that you can SEE the techniques carried out!
Aggression/Reactivity:
If your dog is aggressive, there are 4
books I recommend regularly, depending on the scope of the problem:
Homeward
Bound: Life with Dogs by Brenda Rushman (Release date: Jan. 1,
2003!) Covers behavior, working with rescued dogs, doing
responsible rescue, how to adopt a dog safely, etc. See the Table
of Contents by clicking the link!
The Canine Aggression
Workbook, by James O'Heare. (this is VERY in-depth, covering an
entire range of problematic aggression problems, with much information
on WHY these problems occur)
Dogs are From Neptune, by Jean Donaldson. (more geared toward the
'how-to' end of things, but concise, in Donaldson's unique way of
defining protocols!)
"Mine!" by Jean Donaldson (this one covers resource guarding
in-depth -- an exceptional resource!!)
