This comparison is presented in an effort to inform
prospective owners of the costs involved in owning a St. Bernard as a pet. Bear in
mind that I live in rural Ohio -- my costs are much lower than someone who lives in an
area where the over-all cost of living is higher. My dogs eat a high-quality
kibble, and the yearly price to feed them reflects this. Also, since I deal with
Rescued dogs, many of which are not spayed/neutered before the first year is up, I've
included that information in the successive year information. If you acquire a dog
through Rescue, the spay/neuter is done before you take possession, and that cost would be
included in the adoption fee. However, some circumstances prevent our having it done
(heartworm status, for example), so I felt the information should be included.
This discusses basic care only -- only cost to feed and the
basics of veterinary care. It does not include such things as initial purchase price
of the dog, grooming supplies, bowls, leashes, obedience training costs, toys, or any of
the little extras we all like to bestow upon our pets.
